PD Dr. Harald Seeger studied medicine at the Universities Mainz, Tuebingen (Germany) and Yale medical school (USA) were he also spent one year as a medical student research fellow in nephrology. After graduating, he moved to the Institute of Neuropathology at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship studying neurodegenerative disorders. He then received his training in internal medicine and nephrology at the Stadtspital Zurich and the USZ were he acted as attending physician in nephrology since 2014. Since 2021, he served as deputy director of the Division of Nephrology before moving to the Kantonsspital Baden in 2023 as head of nephrology.
His main areas of interest in clinical nephrology are autoimmune nephropathies, diabetic kidney disease and nephrolithiasis. Education and training of medical students and junior doctors is an additional focus. Harald Seeger is active in international clinical trials and conducts retrospective analyses and biochemical studies addressing questions in the field of glomerulonephritis and urolithiasis. He has helped to build and currently heads the USZ nephrology biobank and is substantially involved in an international consortium that aims to establish specific biomarkers for glomerular kidney injury. As an active member of the Swiss Society of Nephrology, he currently serves as co-chair of the diabetic kidney disease working group and as president of the national examination board for nephrology.
