Dr Valerie Luyckx obtained her MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She trained in Internal Medicine at University of Miami and in Nephrology at Harvard Medical School. She holds an MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Biomedical Ethics at the University of Zurich. She has held faculty positions in nephrology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Harvard Medical School and the University of Alberta, most recently as Associate Professor. She is based at the Department of Public and Global Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute, University of Zurich and holds affiliate positions in the Renal Division at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, Red Cross Children’s Hospital, University of Cape Town. Her research activities include the challenges of justice, ethics and moral distress relating to resource allocation and the prevention and management of kidney disease and in resource limited regions. She is an active advocate for kidney health, with the goal of supporting equity, local expertise, and fair priority setting for quality kidney care in resource limited settings. Given her clinical experience in both adult and pediatric nephrology she is passionate about building a bridge between the two fields to foster renal health across the life course. She is currently deputy chair of the advocacy working group of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and a member of the EUDIAL Working Group of the ERA (European Renal Association) and the ERA Taskforce supporting Ukraine. She is a board member of the International Society for Priorities in Health. She serves on the Swiss Central Ethics Committee (ZEK).
